How to Measure for Drywall: Walls and Ceilings

Measure each wall's length and the ceiling height, add the wall areas and the ceiling's length × width, then decide about openings. Drywall estimates often treat walls as solid, and the planner offers an option to subtract doors and windows.

Updated · Planner: Drywall

Measuring for drywall is a routine, and it works best on paper. Sketch the room, label the walls, and take the numbers in the same order every time.

Take the measurements in order

1. Length of each wall (or length and width for a plain rectangle)

2. Ceiling height

3. Length × width of the ceiling, if it is being covered

4. Door and window sizes, if you plan to deduct them

For a simple rectangular room, the wall surface is the perimeter × the height. A 12 × 14 ft room with 8 ft walls has 416 sq ft of wall and 168 sq ft of ceiling.

Solid walls or deducted openings

The planner treats walls as solid by default. That is a deliberate choice: the board still goes up around an opening, the piece cut out is not always usable elsewhere, and an estimate that errs slightly high is easier to live with than one that runs short. You can switch on the deduction if you prefer a tighter number.

OpeningsSurface to coverCalculatedBuy
Walls treated as solid584 sq ft20.08 sheets21 sheets
Door and two windows deducted533 sq ft18.32 sheets19 sheets

This example assumes

  • 4 × 8 ft sheets and a 10% waste allowance
  • A 3 × 7 ft door and two 3 × 5 ft windows
  • Ceiling included

Deducting the openings lowers the surface from 584 sq ft to 533 sq ft, and takes the order from 21 sheets to 19. Whether to take that saving is your call.

Odd shapes

Gable walls are triangles: half of the base times the height. A wall with a sloped ceiling is a trapezoid. For a room the planner cannot shape, split the surface into rectangles, estimate each, and add the areas as one custom total.

What changes the estimate?

  • Whether the ceiling is being covered
  • Whether you deduct openings or treat walls as solid
  • Ceiling height, which multiplies the whole perimeter
  • Wall features such as bump-outs or half walls that are easy to leave out

Once you have the surface, the sheet count guide turns it into sheets and the supporting materials.
